Where Will I Work?

You will work with some of the most effective non-profit organizations dealing with poverty in Chicago, New Orleans, New York City, and Washington, DC. These organizations all have a long-term commitment to working on urban poverty issues from a variety of different perspectives, including housing, healthcare, education, and hunger. Jobs range from direct service (case management, teaching, staffing medical clinics, etc.) to direct advocacy (legal services) to community organizing (for workers' rights, tenants' rights, etc.). While the issues and methods of our placements vary, each position is designed to allow you to work directly with the people served by the organization.

AVODAH placements are full-time staff positions, not just internships, so you can expect to gain valuable work skills in the course of your year of service. The AVODAH staff, which is in regular contact with placement agencies and supervisors, provides support for work-related issues.

AVODAH matches you with placements based on your interest and skills. While we can't guarantee a particular placement, we work hard to find you the right match. (You are not accepted into the program until you have been selected by a placement site.)

The Matching Process

The system for matching you with an organization involves the following process:

  1. You will receive a list of potential jobs and placements. You will rank your top 3 choices.
  2. Each organization ranks their top 3 candidates based on your resume and application essays.
  3. The organizations have the opportunity to interview as many candidates as they wish, until both you and the organization have made a match. Likewise, you will have the opportunity to talk to AVODAH Corps members in those positions or employees at that organization.
  4. This process continues until a match is made. You will be asked to make a decision about being in AVODAH on the same day that you match with one of your choices. Therefore, prior to the matching process, please give serious thought to this decision so that you will be prepared to commit when you match with a site.

If you have more questions, please read about our application process.

Testimonials

My AVODAH placement at Capital Area Immigration Rights Coalition (CAIR) was the most challenging and inspiring experience of my life. I had read many stories about detention facilities and the tribulations within our immigration system, but nothing could have given me the perspective that I gained by sitting face to face with a person who had been detained. My experience at CAIR inspired me to pursue a career in immigration law. I would never had this incredible opportunity, nor insight into my future goals, if not for AVODAH.”
