AVODAH Overview
AVODAH strengthens the Jewish community’s fight against the causes and effects of poverty in the United States by engaging participants in service and community-building that inspire them to become lifelong leaders for social change whose work for justice is rooted in and nourished by Jewish values.

Since 1998, AVODAH’s Service Corps program has placed young Jewish adults in a year of full-time service at antipoverty organizations in New York, Chicago, New Orleans, and Washington, DC. During the year, corps members live together and participate in weekly educational programs, facilitated by local experts, educators, and community leaders. In 2014, AVODAH also launched the AVODAH Fellowship, a leadership development program for early-career antipoverty professionals and lay leaders. AVODAH also supports and engages a network of hundreds of alumni across the country.  

Position Overview
AVODAH seeks an engaging, passionate and entrepreneurial individual to join the Washington, DC team as a Development Officer. The Development Officer will collaborate closely with the DC Program Director and will be responsible for stewarding existing DC-area major donors, growing AVODAH’s base of support in the DC-region and leading the DC Advisory Council.  This position reports to the national Director of Development and Communications, who is based in New York.


  • In consultation with the Director of Development and Communications, set fiscal year revenue targets and individual donor and foundation strategies for the DC region.

  • Steward and solicit DC-area individual major donors, and support AVODAH’s Executive Director’s efforts regarding same.  

  • In consultation with the Director of Foundation Relations, identify prospective foundation funders and ambassadors thereto, and assist in stewarding DC-area foundation funders.

  • Execute local elements of national fundraising campaigns, including the year-end campaign and the incoming corps member campaign.

  • Plan a series of intimate fundraising events, including but not limited to ticketed major donor events, dinners and parlor meetings.

  • Conduct prospect research in support of regional fundraising efforts.

  • Work closely with the DC Program Director to form local partnerships to raise AVODAH’s profile, meaningfully engage the local community in our work and connect our donors and the community to our program participants.

  • Draft communications to and reports for individual donors.  

  • Help recruit for and work in partnership with the DC Advisory Council to increase AVODAH’s visibility in the DC region, cultivate AVODAH’s major donors and attract new major donors.



  • At least three (3) years nonprofit development experience, including work with major donors.

  • Ability to identify and cultivate relationships with and solicit gifts from new and existing stakeholders.

  • Ability to work with volunteers and engage them in organizational missions and goals.

  • Strong interpersonal and conversational skills.  

  • Relentless drive to implement strategies and achieve goals.

  • Collaborative work style coupled with ability to work autonomously at a high level.

  • Creativity and appetite for a fast-paced work environment.  

  • Broad familiarity with domestic poverty issues, Jewish leadership and the Jewish community.

  • Familiarity with Salesforce preferred.


Note: We’re looking for an entrepreneurial, creative self-starter who ideally is already part of the DC community. For the right candidate, we will consider a part-time arrangement.
