Job Title: San Francisco Program Officer, Pursue: Action for a Just World
Location: San Francisco
Position Summary
Help build and strengthen the San Francisco-Bay Area Jewish social justice community.
Pursue sparks and sustains social change by engaging Jews ages 21-39 where their Jewish values meet their passion for social justice, building communities that take action for social change. Pursue’s primary work takes place in New York and San Francisco. Pursue is a joint project of American Jewish World Service and AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps.
The San Francisco-based Program Officer will collaborate with the national Pursue team to develop ongoing training, advocacy, leadership development and networking opportunities for Jews in their 20’s and 30’s who are committed to exploring the multiple ways in which social justice, social change and Jewish values intersect.
American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is an international development organization motivated by Judaism’s imperative to pursue justice. AJWS is dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the developing world regardless of race, religion or nationality. Through grants to grassroots organizations, volunteer service, advocacy and education, AJWS fosters civil society, sustainable development and human rights for all people, while promoting the values and responsibilities of global citizenship within the Jewish community.
AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps strengthens the Jewish community’s fight against the causes and effects of poverty in the United States. We do this by engaging participants in service and community building that inspire them to become lifelong agents for social change whose work for justice is rooted in and nourished by Jewish values.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create innovative programs and events that address social justice issues within a Jewish context;
- Cultivate relationships with alumni of AJWS and AVODAH service programs, with alumni & colleagues from other like-minded Jewish service and social justice organizations, and with individuals in Pursue’s age demographic;
- Facilitate the development of activist, social and professional networks for the SF Pursue community;
- Develop, in coordination with the Pursue team and other colleagues, targeted social change efforts (including educational programs, advocacy opportunities and campaigns);
- Work in partnership with the national Pursue team to develop relevant regional and national initiatives, programs and campaigns;
- Collaborate with the Pursue team to engage in strategic planning for the greater Pursue community;
- Conduct and disseminate periodic evaluation of all activities; and
- Perform other organizational duties and/or special projects as directed by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS plus minimum of three years work experience
- Significant experience and skills in program development, event planning, and informal education
- Knowledge about and commitment to the Jewish and social justice communities and the work of integrating social activism and Jewish life
- Experience with community, political or issue advocacy campaign organizing strongly desired
- Detail oriented and well-organized, able to manage multiple complex tasks
- Flexible work style and demonstrated team building skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Creative thinker
- Ability to build relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds
- Knowledge and experience with evaluation techniques and analysis
- Experience with service programs and social change efforts preferred
