Alumni Spotlight

Following their AVODAH year, members of the alumni community and their friends continue to make social change happen in a variety of ways reflective of their diverse passions and interests. Here, in partnership with AJWS, we highlight just a few of these incredible individuals:


Maielle Helman

Maielle Helman Maielle Helman participated in AJWS Volunteer Corps in 1999 in Nicaragua. She responded to our interview questions via e-mail from La Paz, Bolivia, where she is working for the World Food Program as a Leland Fellow of the Congressional Hunger Center. MORE->

 

Kate Koester

Kate Koester Kate Koester was a group leader for AJWS Volunteer Summer in Honduras in 2007. A social worker who has focused on human rights and violence prevention, she is currently the Social Justice Team Co-Chair of the Kavana Cooperative in Seattle. MORE->

 

Jeff Sharlein

Jeff Sharlein Jeff Sharlein participated in AVODAH in New York in 2001-2002. A social worker, Jeff currently volunteers with Earthworks Urban Farm in Detroit. MORE->

 

Ilana Zafran

Ilana Zafran participated in AVODAH in Chicago 2006-2007. She continues to work at her AVODAH placement organization, Umoja Student Development Corporation, a model of school-community partnership that works to develop students as learners and leaders. MORE->

Jeff Gluckman

Jeff GluckmanJeff Gluckman participated in AVODAH in 2007-2008 in Washington, D.C. He continues to work at his AVODAH placement organization, Metro TeenAIDS, as the evaluation and program development manager.

Maya TrabinMaya Trabin has been a member of the Bay Area City Team since December 2007. She currently works at the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, which seeks to promote equal rights and opportunities for all people.

Mark Greenfield

Mark GreenfieldMark Greenfield participated in an AJWS delegation to Guatemala with Congregation B'nai Jeshurun and was a group leader for a delegation to El Salvador with Capital Camps, both in 2008. He will be starting a graduate program for social work at Hunter College in September.
